Measurement and embedding

Measurement helps to prove the added value of internal communication and the impact of working on the interlinked areas of people in IC, structure and themes. Embedding achievements in internal communication in an organization's normal operations is needed to integrate improvements sustainably.

Measurement

Investing resources in internal communication demands that its results are measured. Options are measuring the impact of one or various tools, or the return of internal communication efforts and/or discipline. An easy option is to integrate measurement in employee engagement surveys.

IC audit and IC business case

Involve uses quantitative and/or qualitative research for measuring either a single means, the entire communication structure or the impact of all internal communications. We provide two options:

  • IC audit: scans all five focus areas of internal communications: people, structure, themes, measurement/embedding and IC discipline. The audit can be tailored to specific needs and be applied to parts of an organization.
  • IC business case: we can make a business case for internal communication by defining its impact and contribution to achieving major organizational performance indicators. We can look for hard and soft proof of results of internal communication activities and interventions, especially in terms of employee engagement and motivation.

Embedding internal communication in the organization

Internal communication is most effective when it is an integrated element of (project) management and co-operation, and is guarded by, for instance, the communication discipline. An option is to explicitly incorporate communication roles and responsibilities in appraisal systems. It can also be embedded in financial or HR cycles, primary processes and the annual planning cycle, so that the demand for internal communication and the resources needed are assessed in alignment with other operational elements of an organization.

Involve can also embed internal communication by developing competence profiles and appraisal systems.
